Operations Team

Heidi Mucherie, Chief Executive Officer

Heidi has over twelve years experience working in Detroit's community development field as an urban planner, policy analyst, and program evaluator. Her previous experience includes working as a community and land use planner and policy analyst for the Detroit City Planning Commission. In addition, Heidi coordinated an evaluation of Detroit's Community Development Block Grant program under a research grant awarded to Wayne State University by the City of Detroit in 1997. Heidi began working with Community Legal Resources in 2006 as a Pro Bono Program Manager, and was appointed Executive Director in January 2007. Under her leadership, CLR has quadrupled its staff and budget and developed and launched a package of legal and technical services to help communities respond to the foreclosure and vacancy crisis. Heidi is a 2000 graduate of the Master of Public Administration program at Wayne State University.

 

Maya Cadwell Stovall, Chief Operating Officer

Maya is originally from Detroit's Woodbridge neighborhood and has extensive professional experience across areas of corporate finance, investment banking, marketing, risk management, strategic advisory, and theoretical economic framework research and analysis. As founder of a startup boutique consulting firm, Maya provided comprehensive operational and strategic planning advisory services to clients within the nonprofit and education sectors. Prior to this venture, Maya worked as a financial associate at a Wall Street investment bank, and a corporate finance senior analyst at a global automotive parts supplier. At Delphi Corporation, Maya conducted global financial reporting and risk management, restructuring implementation, and capital structure management as a member of the treasurer's corporate finance leadership team. At JPMorgan, Maya was a member of the highly competitive JPMorgan Scholar MBA program, in which she held responsibilities across Legal & Compliance Operations; Global Currency & Commodities Derivatives and Risk Management Sales; Institutional Asset Management Sales & Marketing; and Risk Analytics Macroeconomic Portfolio Research. Maya received a Master of Business Administration degree from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business ('07), and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Finance from Howard University, Washington D.C. ('04). Maya is excited to work for efficient allocation of economic resources and enhancement of access to high-quality, productive life opportunities for citizens of all communities.   

Sarida Scott, Chief Progam Officer

Sarida Scott has eleven years of legal experience, much of which has been devoted to working with the community and in legal services.  Her previous experience includes working as a community prosecutor for the City of Detroit Law Department where she collaborated with various City departments, county representatives and community groups to resolve quality of life issues.  She was also the corporation counsel representative to the newly created Department of Administrative Hearings, designed to more effectively address property maintenance and solid waste issues in Detroit.  Sarida began working for CLR in 2006 as our Director of Legal Services and Policy.  She received a BSE from the University of Michigan and is a 1997 graduate of the Boalt Hall School of Law, University of California, Berkeley.  Sarida was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1997

Sara Jean Baker, Communications and Development Manager

Sara Jean Baker has over eight years experience in the nonprofit sector and over ten years of professional administrative experience. She previously worked at Central Care Management Organization, where she was integral in the intake and referral process and improved quality standards and reporting methods. At CLR, Sara has been responsible for a diverse array of functions, including office management, fund development, marketing, grant writing, event planning, and program evaluation. She graduated from the University of Maryland with a BA in Communications & Journalism  and loves combining her work experience and education toward improving CLR's operations and communications. She is currently studying to be a registered yoga instructor and likes to spend any of the small amount of free time she has reading classical literature. 

Malanye Curry, Office Associate

Malanye joined the CLR family in September 2009 working with the Detroit Land Bank Authority on a part time basis. She has over 20 years experience working in the nonprofit human services area including positions as community organizer, job and family coach, community resource manager, job developer/site manager and currently director of a senior center. She holds a degree in Psychology and has certification in Management Leadership. As a former Precinct Delegate and by working with other elected officials, she is quite active collaborating with other community leaders and activists for a stronger and safer Detroit.  

Legal & Policy Team

Michael Brady, Director of Legal & Policy Programs

Michael is a proud resident of Detroit, an alumnus of U of D Jesuit High School, and a graduate of Wayne State University Law School, where he also earned a Graduate Certificate in Economic Development from the Department of Urban Planning.  His legal practice area centers on urban redevelopment, including nuisance abatement, code enforcement, environmental, land use, public financing, and local government law. Michael has involved himself in the needs of the community by working in such varied contexts as assisting federal Judge John Feikens on the DWSD case; working for Wayne County's Nuisance Abatement Program (NAP); interning with the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation (DEGC)'s Brownfield Redevelopment Authority (DBRA); and the Wayne County Land Bank. As the Legal and Policy Director at Community Legal Resources (CLR), Michael works on various legal and policy initiatives of importance to the nonprofit community.  He received his BA in History with a minor in Spanish from the Residential College at the University of Michigan. Michael enjoys cycling around the city, baking, and cooking; his favorite novel is "The Brothers Karamazov." 

Leor Barak, Pro Bono Program Manager

Leor Barak has over seven years of legal, public interest and community experience, most of which has involved communities in the City of Detroit.  After some experience working in the corporate legal environment and in private practice, Leor litigated as a practicing student attorney and served as a Board Member at the Free Legal Aid Clinic, Inc., which provides legal services to low income individuals.  In addition, Leor has experience with the Civil Rights Division of the Attorney General’s Office as well as the Wayne County Corporation Counsel.  Leor began as the Community Legal Resources Pro Bono Program Manager in March of 2007.  He received a BA in Political Science from the University of Michigan in 2002 and a Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University Law School in 2006.  Leor is also currently working towards a Masters in Business Administration from Kettering University.

Samira Guyot, Pro Bono Program Associate

Samira Guyot joined CLR in 2010 after graduating from the University of Wisconsin School of Law. Samira brings a commitment to expanding Access to Justic in the legal sector and extensive experience in public interest law, program development and community affairs. While in law school she built expertise in nonprofit and government legal practice through her work for the Public Policy Research Institute of Milwaukee, the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Prior to law school, Samira served as an advocate for children and families in underserved communities as a teacher, curriculum developer, and program manager in public and private education. Samira holds a B.A. from Columbia University, an M.Ed. from National-Louis University in Chicago and was admitted to the Wisonsin Bar in 2010. Samira hails from Madison, Wisconsin where she was raised by native Detroiters. She is excited about Detroit's revitalization and spending the summer on the shores of Lake Michigan. 

Justin Sheehan, Statewide Program Manager

Building on a foundation of Social Work training from the Michigan State University School of Social Work, Justin earned his Juris Doctorate, Cum Laude, from the Michigan State University College of Law graduating with a concentration in corporate and business law. Work at a community center prior to law school coupled with experience in the transactional business and securities litigation arenas, Justin brings a unique understanding and appreciation of the legal and social aspects of his work. A lover of music and, more importantly, his wife, Justin takes seriously the calling, “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”  With a fierce pride for the diverse and resilient communities that make up this great state, Justin is honored to take part in the work CLR is doing and will continue to do for years to come.

Danielle Lewinski, Director of Planning & Technical Programs

Danielle has worked with nonprofits and community development corporations over the past four years. In that time, Danielle has directed her work and research on Detroit, with a recent focus on vacant properties. Danielle's vacant property work has centered on community-based strategy development, public policy analysis, and land use planning. Danielle received a BA in African and African-American Studies from Mount Holyoke College in 2006, a Masters of Urban Planning from the University of Michigan in 2008, and a Graduate Certificate in Real Estate Development from the University of Michigan in 2008. 

Sam Butler, Technical Project Manager

Before joining CLR in July 2010, Sam spent three years woking for the Creekside Community Development Corporation, eventually serving as the organization's Interim Executive Director. While at Creekside, Sam fashioned an innovative lease-purchase model for infill residential rehab, quadrupled the amount of funds available for home repair grant, and worked with residents to initiate a code enforcement advocacy campaign. Sam also co-authored the Neighborhood Revitalization Strategic Framework published by the Community Development Advocates of Detroit (CDAD) and currently serves as the chair on CDAD's Strategic Framework committee. Beset by many interests, Sam has degress in Fine Arts, Art History and Political Science from the University of Michigan. He received his Masters of Urban Planning from the University of Michigan in 2007.

Elizabeth Luther, Technical Project Manager

Elizabeth joined the CLR staff in December 2010 and is excited to be working alongside a great Planning and Technical Program team, providing high-quality planning and technical assistance to Detroit's nonprofit community organizations and residents. While studying at the University of Michigan, Elizabeth worked on projects in Detroit addressing neighborhood commercial corridors, vacant property inventories, neighborhood indicators, non-motorized infrastructure, and the City's system of community development corporations. Prior to joining CLR, Elizabeth led economic development and community planning processes in Benton Harbor, MI, and held a fellowship at the Chicago Transit Authority. She received a B.A. and a B.S. from the University of Notre Dame in 2004, and graduated from the University of Michigan in May 2009 with a master's degree in Urban and Regional Planning.   

Shamyle Nesfield, Director of Education & Outreach

Shamyle Maya Nesfield has over ten years experience developing and designing community based programs and coordinating outreach efforts in New York City and Michigan.  A native New Yorker and graduate of New York University in 2001, Shamyle moved to Michigan to complete the Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan in 2002 where she concentrated in Management and Community Social Systems.  Her previous experience includes working as the Program Director for a nonprofit based in Ann Arbor, and Director of two grant funded projects based out of Eastern Michigan University.  Shamyle has extensive experience in grant writing, program development, and community organizing. Shamyle is excited to be a part of the CLR team working as Project Manager for the Detroit Vacant Property Campaign.  In May of 2009, she received a Juris Doctorate from Wayne State University.

Dalton Roberson, Jr., Education and Outreach Program Manager droberson@clronline.org, 313-969-7197

Dalton Roberson, Jr. joined the team in May 2010. In addition to his work for the Detroit Vacant Property Campaign, Dalton will also be handling community relations for the Detroit Office of Foreclosure Prevention and Response. Dalton comes to DVPC with a diverse professional background that includes work as a congressional staffer in the United States House of Representatives and Internal Communications Coordinator for the MI AFL-CIO’s 2008 political program. As the Senior Associate for Economic Equity with New Detroit, he led an effort to introduce bank presidents, developers and entrepreneurs to some of Detroit’s most prosperous and developing neighborhoods. Dalton holds a B.A. degree in political science from Howard University, and prior to joining CLR, Dalton was a candidate for public office. The relationships he built during that time will be an asset to DVPC and its efforts to outreach to the community.
